Take a trip back in time to meet historical figures!
Hongseong has been the birthplace of numerous historical figures who are still admired and celebrated today. They include the famous General Choi Yeong of Goryeo; the loyal subject Seong Sam-mun of Joseong; General Kim Jwa-jin who defeated the Japanese in the Battle of Cheongsan-ri; Han Yong-un, a Buddhist monk and independence activist who resisted Japanese colonial rule; Han Seong-jun, a master of traditional Korean dance; and Lee Ung-no, a painter who demonstrated the originality and identity of Korean painting on the international stage. As such, a number of people born in Hongseong has made a mark in their areas of specialty from literature and the arts to the military.
The Hero Festival held in Hongseong is an “edutainment” festival that educates people in an entertaining way. The festival held at the Hongjueupseong Fortress consists of thematic performances centering on the historical figures from the region and experiential learning programs that focus on their achievements and biographies. Not only that, visitors can enjoy local food and Hongseong hanwoo (Korean beef), which has won the Grand Prize at the Korea Brand Awards, at affordable prices during the festival period
