Yongbongsan Mountain is the most popular tourist attraction in Hongseong and is considered a must-visit place. It was given its name, Yongbong, because it resembles a yong (dragon) and the head of a bonghwang (phoenix).
It is also called Palbongsan because it has 8 mountain peaks. It is seated in Hongbuk-myeon, Hongseong-gun and Sangha-ri, Deoksan-myeon, Yesan-gun. Its peak is at 381m, so it isn't that tall and doesn't have rugged terrains. However, because of its splendid natural scenery and the fascinating rock forms, it is called the second Geumgangsan Mountain.
At the peak of the Yongbongsan Mountain, you will have your breath taken away by the harmonious landscape of the Deoksungsan Mountain of Yesan, Gayasan Mountain of Seosan and Yedang Plains. It attracts streams of hikers all year-round as its terrains aren't very rugged and people of all ages can climb it easily. From this mountain, one can see the Chungcheongnam-do Office new town that is being newly established. Furthermore, it contains multiple cultural assets such as the Yongbongsa Temple, Hongseong Singyeong-ri Maaeyeoraeipsang (Treasure No. 355; a Buddhist statue dating from the Goryeo Dynasty), Yongbongsa Maaebul (Buddha image carved on a cliff), and Sanghari Mireukbul.
