on mother side exited and he was born.
Sung Sam-Mun is one of the six executed faithful retainers
who were opposed to Royal Prince Suyang's attempt to succeed
to the throne after deposing his nephew king Danjong. During
King Sejong's reign (1418~1450), he made a big contribution
to creating Korean script, Hunminjungum, as a scholar of Jibhyeoneon
and was killed for keeping his fidelity to King Danjong. In
the 2nd year of King Sukjong (1676), Lee Ryang built a shrine
near his old house and enshrined six executed royalists. The
Government called it as Nokwun Private School, which was renamed
as Noheun. Ever since that, every December, memorial ceremony
was dedicated to them until Daewongun abolished all the private
schools under his private school abolition decree. Later on,
students of Confucianism put the mortuary tablet for six and
performed memorial ceremony, call it as Noheundan.
In 1954, Hongseong historic site promotion committee renovated
the place and performed the memorial ceremony every October
15th on lunar calendar. The previous memorial ceremony site
is located about 50km away northeast from this place and historic
monument is at the entrance of a town about 30km from here.
