| Paper string craft is of a skill of
making a bowl by twisting and weaving papers, called "Royeokkgae."
The origin is not exactly known, but it is recorded that there
were many paper bowls in the Joseon Dynasty. So it is presumed
that they had existed before the Joseon Dynasty. It is manufactured
by twisting Korean paper soaked in the water like a straw rope;
the twisted paper folded in half and each strand woven one by
one. Its pattern and type could be freely changeable and glued
to the ready-made paper bowl. Finally, it is completed by polishing
the surface with a cashew, a kind of paint. A basket, tray,
suspender, shoes, and others could be made of those paper strings.
Paper string manufacture, a traditional art, is designated as
an intangible cultural asset to hand down and protect its technique.
Its manufacture was temporarily discontinued, but revived by
traditional artist Choe Yeong-jun, who lives in Hongseong-gun,
Chungcheongnam-do. |
