This is a large statue of Buddha engraved on a protruding rock carved into the shape of a shrine. It is 4m in height and is located on Mt. Yongbongsan in Hongsung Shinkyeong-ri of Chungcheongnam-do.
Overall, the headpiece is solid and integrity is shown on the face, but the statue is unbalanced from of its loss of volume towards the bottom. The yukgye (a protuberance on top of the head symbolizing supreme wisdom), shaped like a topknot rising from the bald head, is fair-sized. The face is voluptuous compared to the body, and the calm smile gives off a mild impression. The outer shape of the body deteriorates and becomes flat towards the bottom. The clothing wrapped around both shoulders is clearly expressed by several lines under the neck but the thin lines under that are like a graph. Only the outline of the mandorla (Buddhist halo of light), which gives shape to the light coming from the body, is expressed by an intaglio using the carved side of the rock. .
While the face is plump and integral, the graph-like ripples of the clothing and unskilled carving techniques indicate that this statue is a rock-cut Buddhist image of the early Goryeo Period.
